Families are Always Interesting
I would tell you that there are no good families or bad families, only interesting families.
Getting to know people has been part of the gig of being a pastor. One church member
told me during a fall festival “Go shake hands and hold babies” as if it were a campaign.
Yet, it has become a part of the normal routines of the job; meeting people that is.
That being said, I’ve met hundreds if not thousands of people over the years. One thing
is in common among everyone, they all have families, and they are all interesting!
Especially mine! My grandmother used to take me to visit an uncle on a regular basis.
He lived in a gated community with a security detail that included a few beautiful
German Shepherds. You had to check in as you arrived and there was a special area set
up with picnic tables bolted to the floor. I always thought it odd that we checked our
bags and belongings when we came in but as a kid I didn’t think anything of it. We
would visit my Uncle Jimmy and leave for the day. It wasn’t until my early twenties that
I passed the gated community he lived in and realized it was the Decatur County
Sheriff’s office and Prison. Who knew?!
Yes, Families are always interesting, and just when I think yours is the most interesting
family in the world, you find out it’s not! One of our kids last week said, “Why can’t our
family be normal?” to which Katie and I exclaimed simultaneously, “We are normal!”
The very definition of normal is to “conform to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.
It is usual, typical, and expected that families are always interesting! Take comfort in
knowing that just when you thought your family couldn’t get any more interesting,
yours is just like everyone else’s! Happy, Healthy, and Sometimes Messy, but always
interesting!
We hope you enjoy this series over the next few weeks and that through it God
ministers to your hearts and minds. We love you guys!
Keep the Faith,
Pastor Tommy
